Carpe Diem http://dipenchaudhary.com But only in their dreams can man be truly free. 'Twas always thus, and always thus will be. posterous.com Mon, 18 Oct 2010 00:54:00 -0700 Dev Camp Pune Rundown http://dipenchaudhary.com/dev-camp-pune-rundown http://dipenchaudhary.com/dev-camp-pune-rundown

Last saturday, I was at Dev camp pune organized by thoughtworks. It was my first dev camp and I heard good things about the event held in bangalore. This was also my first time at thoughtworks office in pune, which I must admit is pep with a industrial shed kind of feel to it (specially the ceilings) I usually debate with myself at the net utility of attending conferences and meetups and most often the lazy in me takes over and I end up attending very few but dev camp had some amazing sessions on cards and so I was there.

I was very interested in functional programming sessions on display but was disappointed because both clojure and scala sessions got cancelled, the first session I attended was on GIT object model and there were some good insights by Praveen on the internal representation and working of GIT which mostly concentrated on how git stores commits, trees and files using hashes and how do these change in case of branching, commits, tagging etc. Session was mostly hands on and he also demoed some low level git commands which I was unaware off. So far so good.

Then came the good part, I stumbled into couple of college friends and we got to catchup over lunch. After lunch, we chose to attend applying functional programming patterns to OO by mark needham and it was a fast paced presentation showing loads of code C# snippets on applying functional programming, I feel the presentation lacked perspective on the why and benefits part. He briefly discussed functional programming ideologies but I felt it needed more coverage as functional programming is still not widely used in indian IT. I am sure most people attending confused it with procedural programming. Key outcomes from the presentation were:

1> Use functional programming in small changes to avoid duplication and for refactoring.

2> Functional programming in OO can lead to bad readability of code if overused. You tend to read inside out..

3> Functional programming is more about transformation of your mind as a programmer and the way you look at problems.

4> The input-output paradigm is beautiful when it comes to building fluent api's ( like jquery )

We then attended Deep dive into nodejs by srikant, which was something I was looking forward to eagerly. The presentation started with some practical benefits and hello world type demos showing structure of a nodejs program. It again I feel lacked perspective and discussion on ideologies behind nodejs as to why everyone is talking about nodejs and why javascript is one of the most suited language for even driven framework. Srikant demoed a impressive application he built using nodejs and sinatra, rest of the session was dedicated at deconstructing code of his nifty application. All in all nodejs session was highly hands on but I would have liked it more if there was discussion on why part to put things in perspective, other thing I feel srikant could have stressed on is that nodejs is more suited at buiding network programs/services rather than building full blown web applications. I think this kind of led to confusion as many people asked on about production suitability of nodejs. All in all it was a great hands on session at one of the most exciting find of 2010 for me at-least.

The day was soon ending and I then decided to give DSL in groovy's a ditch over a lightning talk by Ram on scaling your infrastructure for large teams, this I feel was the best session at dev camp for its simplicity and Ram's presentation skills. He openly discussed the problems he face as sys admin at thoughtworks and the key lessons he learned at big projects, some of the important lessons learned were:

1> Virtualization is not just a buzz word, its real and can be put to use very effectively.

2> How SVN sucks for large teams and that replacing it with something like git is not just a technical problem but a cultural and people problem.

3> How ZFS saved his life more than one time.

Dev Camp pune was a nice experience all in all and I look forward to attending more of these dev camps and maybe organizing such camps on latest and greatest in pune.

Fri, 21 May 2010 08:23:00 -0700 Drupal rates disconnect http://dipenchaudhary.com/drupal-rates-disconnect http://dipenchaudhary.com/drupal-rates-disconnect

There is a huge disconnect between american and asian market (mostly indian) when it comes to rates charged by drupal shops, I have not seen indian drupal shops charging over 40-50$/hr however established and number of years they have been in business. North American and European clients usually turn towards India, China to cut their costs and is but obvious that an attempt for straight comparison would be stupid, but even when you talk about proportions the best shops have a difference of over 6 times when it comes to per hr rates (50$/hr in comparison to 300$/hr)

Why do you feel there is so much difference? Some things that comes to my mind:

1> The perception that going to india/china means multifold cost cutting.

2> Perception (and to some extent the fact) that the efficiency of these shops is much less than that of american/european counterparts (I am actually interested in efficiency aspects and how it affects the rates)

3> Quality delivered?

4> Lack of community participation -- I feel india has never had the right attitude towards open source software, we love to use them but dont wanna waste time contributing back (except for a minority) and we fail to understand how open source contribution is implicitly affecting our reputation and hence rates (Though, its a refreshing change to see that 6 out of 18 students are indians as part of drupal GSOC 2010)

5> We cave in at the looks of $'s and the fact that there are freelancers in abundance who would work at 5$/hr and more often than not do shitty job coz they agreed at a very low rate in the first instance and wrong estimations to win the project.

Would love to know what do you think? Do you feel there is a disconnect or thats the norm in all outsourcing businesses irrespective of technology and service? Are the clients who come to india are happy with the service they get or they are just happy about the prices they get?

P.S -- At some level, I also feel that we would loose these jobs and projects if it was not for the low rates, and the fact that there are so many of us. Every 3rd of us claims to write php and html as we have passed from an engineering course.

I have often used this iconic expression without worrying much about its origin until last night, the expression stems out from a broken translation of a japanese game called "Zero Wing". I find it very cute, the etymology of this expression. To put things in context the scene goes on like this (from wikipedia) --

Original Script Original English Translation Correct English Translation
機関士:何者かによって、爆発物が仕掛けられたようです。 Mechanic: Somebody set up us the bomb. Engineer: It appears that someone has planted explosives.
通信士:メインスクリーンにビジョンが来ます。 Operator: Main screen turn on. Radio Operator: The main screen is receiving a visual.
CATS:連邦政府軍のご協力により、君達の基地は、全てCATSがいただいた。 CATS: All your base are belong to us. CATS: All of your bases are under our control.
CATS:せいぜい残り少ない命を、大切にしたまえ・・・・。 CATS: You have no chance to survive make your time. CATS: Make the most of these last moments of your lives.
艦長:我々の未来に希望を・・・ Captain: For great justice. Captain: Our hopes for the future

This is funny and cute and is a classic tragedy which became one of the most interesting internet memos. (Source -- wikipedia)

One of my favorite videos on approach to programming, the notion that there is no silver bullet to programming and there will never be one perfect language for all your needs is the mantra a polyglot lives by. For me a polyglot is an open minded infidel who sees his world beyond hate and security, he is someone who understands that perfection is not achieved by ant like dedication. He bend his tools for the purpose and not the other way round.

Tue, 27 Apr 2010 05:17:00 -0700 Do you really think matches are fixed? http://dipenchaudhary.com/do-you-really-think-matches-are-fixed http://dipenchaudhary.com/do-you-really-think-matches-are-fixed

Cricket is involuntary to us, we dont make plans to watch the game and definitely dont count it as a distinctive social activity. Whenever our heroes are playing we end up watching the game or inquire about it as its part of our life. We know that fielding cant change during the free hit or how many men would be inside the circle during the power play, name of a player is engraved in our minds after his first match, there is no better ice breaker between a father and son than a game of cricket. We sure love our cricket and live it as life.

There has been a lot of talk about match fixing in the recently concluded IPL, specially after the modi impeachment by media. There have been reports of modi revealing the outcome of match to his betting front way in advance and hence making serious money. These reports would also mean that matches have been fixed, the same game played in front of hundreds of millions of cricket lovers was fixed and pre planned. These I think are serious allegations, not only against one man, but against the heroes we revere and against intelligence of a cricket lover. I cant speak for all cricket fans but not for once, not in one game I have felt that its a show and not a sport. There have been numerous drop catches and silly dismissals but for me to believe that they were pre planned and executed with ill intention is asking for serious degree of nihilism. Some of the reasons why I have serious doubts on IPL matches being fixed:

1> Lets start with the emo point : We hail these players as demi gods and any human burdened with so much adulation psychologically would not really sell their soul and hopes of millions for any amount of cash.

2> A Match fixed is a mutual consent of both captains and their teams, given that brand value of players like Dhoni, Gilchrist et al lies in 2 digit million USD figure, its unlikely that captains would put that in danger for betting money. Its only now you see Ajay Jadeja on News channels and few ads since the match fixing scandal hit indian team in 2000 (Azhar confessed to match fixing with mongia and jadeja), I think our demi gods do understand that we dont believe in blind love and can burn effigies and discard them from our lives if need be.

3> The IPL teams are culturally diversified and it would be very hard to fix a match in the knowledge of team given that point 1 and 2 above apply on team players and not just the captains, also the risk involved is tremendous. Its also hard to believe that a captain can loose the game on behalf of the whole team when each team has its share of stars. Team selection though can be rigged which would subsequently make captain the all mighty.

4> I haven't been able to spot moments in a game which might make me feel that a match is fixed, yes there have been dropped catches and lofted in the air straight to the fielder shots but to say they were intended that way is little hard for me to comprehend and would require me to have immense faith in the acting capabilities of the players.

Having said all that, we know that we have been through match fixing once before which resulted in fall of some of our favorite players (which we almost hate now) and some of us deciding to not follow the game, we though moved on but since we have a history, we cant deny it. There are also compelling allegations for match fixing by media and inquiry agencies. I am writing this coz if the matches were indeed fixed, then its a serious mockery of my enthusiasm for cricket and the time spent on watching the games and I hate that feeling.

What do you think? Do you think matches were fixed?

Tue, 13 Apr 2010 13:24:00 -0700 My mom finally asked me http://dipenchaudhary.com/my-mom-finally-asked-me http://dipenchaudhary.com/my-mom-finally-asked-me

Some 5 minutes ago, my mom finally asked me "What is twitter?" thanks to Shashi TharoorLalit Modi and the conventional media that most of the non internet savvy Indian moms are intrigued by twitter. They for once are feeling backward while TV news keep mentioning twitter and probably for the first time understanding virtue of internet. Twitter has now hit mainstream in India and with conventional media advertising for it, it has proved as the chosen platform for conversations. This is what users do to an idea, they take it to a totally different level and twitter must be enjoying what users are doing with the platform.

My take on controversy:

1>  Don't give Shashi tharoor the benefit of doubt just coz he is uber cool politician with a twitter account, illustrious resume and a infectious conversationalist, I would wait for facts to come out and I think he was definitely upto something.

2>  Lalit Modi always too smart and too enthusiastic for his own good might be in a soup and might spoil for other franchisee. But it might lead to something very positive, which could open up things in BCCI and would bring out lots of sleazy stuff.

3>  BCCI needs to come under RTI, they cant act as a private body when there is so much advertising money on stake cashed in the name of fanatic cricket following in India.

4>  BJP is plain irritating in its idealistic tone with references to below poverty line population.

5>  And also I somehow I feel media channels are feeling the pinch of these guys not opening on TV but doing so on twitter.

In other news involving twitter on conventional media:

Salman Khan joining twitter and the "projected" tweet war with SRK (the usual masala by conventional media and the one from which twitter doesnt suffer)

Way to go twitter!!

Sun, 04 Apr 2010 20:44:00 -0700 Boffter - Cool contextual commenting system. http://dipenchaudhary.com/boffter-cool-contextual-commenting-system http://dipenchaudhary.com/boffter-cool-contextual-commenting-system

Boffter is a contextual central commenting system that give your readers ability to comment on any section/paragraph of an article. As a content publisher or site admin Boffter allows your readers to express their opinion in context unlike traditional commenting systems (which are per article). It also allow readers to follow particular section in real time, I see it as novel and innovative evolution of 2 way interaction tailored to context, but the real use and application would very much depend on reaction of interwebs on granular level of interaction. There are many use cases for which I see boffter as a natural fit:

1> Sites which publishes how to's, tutorials etc would benefit a lot with ability to provide per paragraph comments.
2> It would help sites with long articles (news sites) to keep interaction fluid across multiple pages.
3> Would help readers opine precisely and accurately without having to "Quote" things.

One of the features I would like Boffter to implement is in the realms of social sharing which is the ability to send a certain paragraph to a friend by tagging the friend on one of the networks. Boffter provides google open id, facebook connect and twitter authentication for the starts which is very functional. To see boffter in action see a short demo below.

Boffter is an Indian product, built by talented 2 people team (One of them being my senior in college) based in Bangalore. They are very much looking for feedback on boffter which you can send via contact form

So what do you think? Would contextual comments work for highly engaging but infidel internet audience? Would readers and specially site admins be party to Boffter?

Tue, 30 Mar 2010 06:19:00 -0700 Fuck Off PLUG, I am unsubscribing. http://dipenchaudhary.com/fuck-off-plug-i-am-unsubscribing http://dipenchaudhary.com/fuck-off-plug-i-am-unsubscribing

Dear Pune Linux User Group,

It was with excitement that I joined your association when I came down to pune and hoped for many conversations with like minded people. You were my first window to pune tech scene and boy I was reading every conversation with a persistent enthusiasm. I took my time as a passive reader of the mailing list and understand the interactions, and things were going good between us. Well one fine day, I decided to reply to one of the mails, it was to share my experience with a person who was facing what I had before and well it bounced back saying "being moderated". I checked my subscription and all I could, e mailed your administrators asking if there is a problem with my e mail, after few days when discussion had died I got a email saying I was top posting and honestly I was like "WOW" I didnt even know about this stuff and I have been on internet for last 7 years. I tried again, it bounced back again, this time my mail text was too large and was not plain text, so I learnt more on the protocol of talking to you. I then again tried, keeping my previous mistakes checked and well it bounced off again, after receiving the automated "In moderation" email I waited, having got no response I wrote to thee again and I was told that my e mail has been posted now. Today my reply was a short one, it was not top posted and well it bounced again. Have I been the unlucky one? Well before I could ask that to myself I got a email from a stranger asking "why do my e mails bounce to plug"? Clearly many people are facing the problem and they have a honest intention to communicate, I don't know about others but I think I'll pass or maybe stay "Read Only" coz clearly for me tools exist to make life easier and not to come in the way.

Plug-mail

Cheers

Fri, 05 Mar 2010 01:13:00 -0800 Why Rubyconf is gonna rock! http://dipenchaudhary.com/why-rubyconf-is-gonna-rock http://dipenchaudhary.com/why-rubyconf-is-gonna-rock

Rubyconf is a international conference for ruby lovers, we at India rarely witness a truly international conference and often cribb about how I wish I was at google IO, drupalcon or LinuxConf. We do have our share of big conferences like FOSS.in, GNUNIFY or Great Indian developer summit but being part of the "official" conference is totally a different experience. In a fortnight I will be travelling to bangalore to attend RubyConf, and well you might ask "you dont know shit about meta programming, why are you going?" and I would say "hmmm, just for the experience, to see heroes of another civilization". For me a civilization is incomplete without its heroes and hell yeah I believe in the concept of heroes and individual power!!

So who is speaking?
will be your next question?

 Now it gets really easy...

Creator of Ruby - Yukihiro Matsumoto "Matz"  (Update: Its a web conference :()

And why do I care again? Well... Maybe because he cared about developers? Ruby is often hailed as one language that has been designed and developed for developer pleasure. So this guy does attract attention from me atleast, even though I am not a rubyist, I can relate to the whole notion.

So 2 days just to see one guy speak?
Well whats wrong?

And well there would be some other rockstars too from the ruby world. You can read all about them here.

Thu, 25 Feb 2010 03:47:00 -0800 Couch Surfing 101 http://dipenchaudhary.com/couch-surfing-101 http://dipenchaudhary.com/couch-surfing-101

Recently I have got active in couch surfing specially in pune community and my first impression is that its much more awesome, personal and social than any other pune related stuff going on internet including twitter and meetups. Pune bunch is a small group but very proactive and passionate about physical meetups, something which is good to see in login/logout world. It has been just 3 days since I joined the group and I have seen one night out at sinhgad planned and 2 meetups already seen through which is just plain awesome for a guy like me who dreams of mountains and his life there but not willing to logout.

Anyways the point of the post is to introduce you to couch surfing 101 written by Benjamin Varquez (One Couch Surfer) which I have converted to a pdf (with my limited formatting vodoo) as it was hard to read the way it was presented in the forums. I hope someone like me who has got used to reading small chunks on internet would appreciate the effort. Also Big Kudos to Benjamin to write the guide in first place.
I have been on couch surfing for quite some time now but I recently got excited when Mitchell (whom I met at GNUNIFY) came to live with us for few days. All about him and times we spent in a separate post.

Thu, 11 Feb 2010 20:00:05 -0800 5 sessions you shouldn't miss at GNUNIFY http://dipenchaudhary.com/5-sessions-you-shouldnt-miss-at-gnunify http://dipenchaudhary.com/5-sessions-you-shouldnt-miss-at-gnunify In a week FOSS enthusiasts from all over the country would be camping at GNUNIFY, annual event to celebrate and discuss FOSS. This would be my first attendance at the event and I am hoping to spend two days talking to interesting people more than learning a technology, but that doesn't hold the tech flare discounted. There are some great sessions planned and my list of 5 hot sessions at GNUNIFY is:

  1. Embracing the Web Platform - This session would be about the state of web by Arun Rangnathan, straight from horses mouth "The talk is meant to be an overview of the web in 2010, and what the future holds in store for us."
  2. WEB.NEXT - This session would talk about jetpack (Disclaimer: I have man crush on azaa Raskin) and weave. I have great-great expectations from this one.
  3. MySQL Performance Tuning: Top 10 Tips - I am hoping this one to be very interactive and would love if the speaker can include sharding tips, using MYSQL for key-value pair storage (ala friendfeed) and tuning tools to monitor IO etc. I am sure the list is ready but it would be great to hear experiences of audience.
  4. eJOSH CMS - Content Management for non-IT professionals in India - Being Drupal fanboy and professional, I would check out some competition here.
  5. FOSS way of making fonts - Typography is something I have high respect for (thanks to the movie helvetica and posts by mark boulton) but know nothing about, so this one comes as a nice surprise and I am hoping it to be an awesome session.
There are other awesome sessions at GNUNIFY about couchdb, clojure, php profiling, embedded linux, beagel board and lots more. There is lots to whet your techie appetite for a year. More than anything there would be awesome people out there. See you there :)

A week doesn't go by when all of a sudden I get intrigued by my laptop wallpaper and start searching about "why the lucky stiff", I am not a rubyist and never heard about _why before he went missing, for some reason it didn't intrigue or shocked me but brought a smile and tears in my face, I remember talking to my girl about _why that night and how I love him without knowing him, seeing his work. I didn't even know about "The poignant guide to ruby" and other _why's work, I just knew that he went by the name "Why the lucky stiff" and he deleted all his profiles, sites and disappeared. I just had this urgent need to talk, as I have deleted my profiles, blogs, IM logins with and without boiling thoughts of how nothing makes sense. Every now and then I relive _why on internet or just looking at my wallpaper (the nonconformist picture), here are some pictures of _why - The real RocknRolla. Leaving with opening lines of his rails conf talk 2006..

Ruby is so......... To code ruby is really to love, To feel passion, to feel pleasure, it stirs you inside so greatly, its such a beautiful language, also erotic i would say. Method calls striped, undressed of their parenthesis, chaining them together raw like... Just red ebullient jewel.

Another fwd e mail, this time filled with images of cricketing tid bits. There are some b/w images which made me think hard on my first cricket match on TV and I think it was the one when Anjali didi (a neighbor in bharatpur) forced us to watch sachin's match and made us cheer, little did I know I would be adoring him through my teen hood.

The first image looks like a match went sour in a city like kota :D

You gotta love the pictures time magazine photographers churn out, for me they are pictorial window to the world. Often I land up on Time to see one of their pictorial story lines, this time its the year 2009 in pictures, 47 curated pictures around the world include tales of obama change in US, war in afghanistan, elections in iran etc. These are my favorite pictures from the lot, the ones I liked without reading the caption, the ones I liked in the first view of them. To read captions/context of pictures and to see all 47 do visit the full slideshow on time

Would like to know which one is your favorite in comments.

Sat, 28 Nov 2009 01:10:00 -0800 Work desks http://dipenchaudhary.com/work-desks http://dipenchaudhary.com/work-desks We have been working on kitchen shelf for last 2 months coz I wanna get the work desk I like, I have been looking at them for couple of months now and have tried almost all queries possible. These are some office desks I liked, they are mostly from the companies I like and appreciate. I dont like cubicles, I like long desks where everything looks messy (thoughtworks is the closest to the messy I imagine) but part of me also admires clean places. One of these days when my research is complete (I hope it does) I am gonna get it cloned at a local furniture store. Till then I will keep adding more. Lemme know which one you liked.

Sat, 21 Nov 2009 00:58:11 -0800 Back to mountain tops - sinhgad tweetup http://dipenchaudhary.com/back-to-mountain-tops-sinhgad-tweetup http://dipenchaudhary.com/back-to-mountain-tops-sinhgad-tweetup If I reconnect with myself truly in all of the natural aspect of world then they have to be mountain tops. Today, I got the chance to be back on the mountain top. Loved it, lived it.

P.S I wanted to write about my association with mountains a little more, but words failed me. So maybe some other time when I am not overwhelmed by mere thoughts of them.
